Tuckasegee Training Trip (Beginner Trips)

by d.britt @, Monday, July 03, 2017, 07:05 (205 days ago)

I will be leading an ETWC Training Paddling Trip this Saturday July 8, 2017 on the Tuckasegee River (Class II) in N.C. The Tuck trip will give novice and experienced paddlers an opportunity to work on river skills while paddling a very scenic and popular river. We’ll be catching eddys, doing peel-outs, ferrying, and other river exercises. This is not a paddle school, but will instead give novice paddlers and our Paddle School Students an opportunity to work on the skills they have learned at paddle school. The Tuck is a good river to paddle in preparation for the Nantahala!

The Plan: The plan is to meet at the Duke public put-in located above the Dillsboro Drop Rapid at 11:00 a.m. (Depending on our group skill level, we might have to portage (walk around) the Dillsboro Drop.) There, we will drop boats and shuttle cars to the Duke take-out located on Hwy 72/19E.
If you plan to attend this trip, please contact me NLT Thursday, June 6, 2017, at 10:00 p.m. You may contact me here on this thread, on Facebook, or by phone at: 865-three-seven-6-three-seven-3-2. If you are a novice paddler please leave your name, a contact number, what type of boat you paddle, and what training/paddle trips you have done this summer? (Please don’t show up to paddle this river with a plastic crap boat from Dick’s Sporting goods or Wal-Mart! Whitewater Rivers require whitewater boats!)

SAFETY BOATERS are needed for this trip!!!!! Safety boaters need to let me know if you plan to attend this trip? If there is very little interest in this trip or if there is NOT enough safety boaters who volunteer to go, I will officially cancel the trip on Friday, July 7 and notify you here and on Facebook. This trip will go RAIN or SHINE if enough people are interested? The weather forecast for Saturday in WNC is for 50% rain.

Carpool: I will not be carpooling since I live near Ten Mile. My shortest route to the Tuck/Nantahala area is via Hwys 72, 129, (or 28,) & 74/19E. If you want to meet me somewhere on Hwy 129 near Chilhowie Lake we could convoy over to Dillsboro? You’ll have to work out your own carpool plan from Knoxville! If you travel on Hwy 129, be alert for police speed traps in the 40 mph area along Chilhowee Lake in Blount County. Cops were hiding behind trees trying to clock speeders there last year.

Please read the warning about the "rock snot" algae issue on the Tuck:

The Tuckasegee River paddling trip scheduled for Saturday, July 8, 2017, has been cancelled due to a lack of interest. There was only one paddler who called to sign up for this trip. The Tuck Trip might be scheduled for later in the Summer if paddlers are interested.
