Beginner trips in the Fall (General Discussion)
Greetings folks. I suppose if one were to get in this sport the best time would be in the Spring. So my timing is really not so good. I will be taking some lessons and purchasing my 1st kayak within the next 4 or 5 weeks. A local retailer referred me to your organization and I see that there are a number of posts on beginner trips. Was an active diver so have plenty of wetsuits for the cooler weather but have to admit I get kind of wimpy when those temps get too low.
So my question is what will my options be for the fall?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Beginner trips in the Fall
The scheduled Club trips seem to wind down in the Fall, but pick-up trips begin mostly because we might get rain which will allow us to paddle some plateau creeks. There should be a few trips going on before it gets real cold. Check here and on Facebook for trip plans.
I'm a Certified Level 4 Kayak Instructor by the ACA, so if I can be of help to you just let me know? Here are some suggestions that I give new paddlers: Make sure you purchase a whitewater RIVERRUNNER or Creeker kayak. Learning will be easier and faster in a Riverrunner kayak than in a boat made for playing (playboat.) Try to get good instruction from a certified instructor so you don't learn and develop bad habits. Breaking bad habits are difficult once they are learned especially bad roll habits.
Here are my suggestions for a good stable river runner kayak if you are buying new: 1. Dagger Mamba. 2. Liquid Logic Remix. 3. Jackson Zen. 4. Jackson Karma. The outfitting in the Dagger Mamba and LL Remix is some of the best in the industry. Be careful at a kayak store! Most of the employees who work there know little about kayaking or kayaks. They will try to sell you junk just to get rid of it!
ETWC has a 6-day (after work) Whitewater Paddling Clinic every June. The cost of the clinic is the best instruction deal in East Tennessee. It's a low cost and high value clinic because you'll get more instruction with us than you will with any other club. Opinions are like bellybuttons, everybody has one. I just gave you mine! Let me know if you have any questions?

Thanks Denzil. Both the Jackson and Dagger have been recommended by several people. Of those that I sat in the Jackson Karma was the most comfortable. But it could be that the Dagger needed some adjustments. I'm a middle aged guy so the comfort factor will be a huge consideration.
Have also heard good comments on the Liquid Logic line. Would be nice to demo a number of these models at one time but doubt that is feasible.
Again thanks for the reply and recommendations.
