New Guy with Questions! (General Discussion)

by UTAero9, Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 12:53 (63 days ago)

Hey everyone,

I just recently decided to take up whitewater kayaking and purchased my gear last week. I wanted to get involved with a good group since all of my friends are too scared at the moment to try kayaking with me (go figure!). Anyway, I wanted to get advice on how to get started and involved with the group, etc. Do I need to be a member to attend the roll practices and beginner trips that are talked about on here? Anyone that would be willing to answer some questions and to help get me started on the right track, please reply with advice or even call or e-mail me with advice and trips/practices I can go to in order to get started. Thanks!

Thomas,

You don't need to be an ETWC member to be part of the scheduled beginner trips (see the forum post for schedule). There is a beginner's trip on the Hiwassee this weekend. I would recommend the Hiwassee as a first river. Contact the listed trip leader if you are interested in participating. The Hiwassee, the Lower Pigeon and the Tuck are all excellent beginner rivers and ETWC has scheduled trips on all these rivers.

Regarding roll practice, there is informal roll practice on Friday evening. Again, a membership in ETWC is not necessary. Attendance by more experience paddlers is not a given so it is wise to either make individual arrangement or at least express interest via the forum.
